Cougars Secure Key 2-1 Win Over Towson
10/16/2016 4:13:00 PM | Women's Soccer
TOWSON, MD. – In a critical game in the CAA Tournament chase, the College of Charleston women's soccer team (10-6-1; 3-3-1 vs. CAA) picked up a much-needed 2-1 win over the Towson Tigers (6-10-1; 3-4 vs. CAA).
• Senior Riley Narum scored her first of the year and the game-winning goal in the 49th minute. Jessica Schifer sailed the ball in from the flats right of the keeper and into the box, where the waiting Narum put the College up 2-0.
• Raymara Barreto scored a similar goal to her strike against Delaware last weekend. Laura Ortega sailed the ball in deep off of a free kick, and after Taylor Sebolao mishandled it, Barreto cleaned up the rebound (14') to put the College up 1-0. Near the end of the game, Towson pulled off a good impression when Emily Marshall sailed in a deep free kick and Marissa Green finished it off with a header (84').
• Outside of a few flurries at the end of both halves, the Cougars handily won the possession battle, outshooting Towson 20-6 overall and 10-3 in shots on goal.
• With her goal, Raymara Barreto (4g, 2a) joined Laura Ortega (6g, 7a) and Jessica Schifer (7g, 2a) as the third Cougar to reach double-digit points on the season.
• Though there's only one weekend remaining on the slate, the CAA standings are still completely and utterly wide open. With two games remaining, the Cougars could finish as high as second overall, or could miss the CAA Tournament altogether.
The Cougars will return to action Friday night at 7 p.m. when the host the Elon Phoenix.
