Cougars Set to Host Critical Final Weekend of CAA Play

CHARLESTON, S.C. – With its CAA Tournament aspirations hanging in the balance, the College of Charleston women's soccer team (10-6-1; 3-3-1 vs. CAA) will host two critically important matches this weekend that will decide whether the CofC season will extend to the post-season.
The Cougars open things up against the Elon Phoenix (7-8-2; 2-4-1 vs. CAA) on Friday night at 7 p.m., and will follow that up by hosting William & Mary (10-6; 4-3 vs. CAA) on Sunday at 1 p.m. for their Senior Day matchup. Lauren Killian, Sarah Blakely, Riley Narum, Suzi Vallez and Alexa Gray will all be recognized in their final regular season home game of their collegiate careers.
Losing out this weekend would critically endanger the Cougars' post-season chances, and would allow all five teams below them in the standings the chance to bypass them. Conversely, winning out would at the very least guarantee the Cougars a trip to the postseason, perhaps even the chance to host. In the immediate term, a win over Elon Friday would guarantee the Cougars no lower than a 7th place finish, rendering the Phoenix, Hofstra and Delaware unable to surpass the College. In addition, if either Towson lost to Northeastern or if UNCW lost to William & Mary Friday, the Cougars would actually clinch the post-season as well.
The Cougars and Phoenix have a lengthy history spanning back to 1999, with CofC controlling the 9-6-1 advantage. For the last five years, home field has been key, with the home-team winning each contest. Against William & Mary however, the Cougars will be looking for their first win in school history, with the Tribe taking all three matchups since the College joined the CAA.
Elon comes into the weekend winless in their last four games. They are led offensively by Erin Tanhauser and Tori Ballatico, who've combined for eight goals on the year. In frame, the Phoenix have turned to a combination of Taylor Mohr and Katelyn Fowler, who have split action this season almost evenly, and combine for a 1.41 GAA and .740 save percentage. William & Mary on the other hand rides a three-game win streak. They rely on Sarah Segan and Rachel Moore, who have 14 of the Tribe's 24 goals this season.
