CAA Tournament Berth on the Line as Cougars Confront Dragons
10/31/2016 11:58:00 AM | Men's Soccer
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team (4-8-3; 2-3-2 vs. CAA) will play host to the Drexel Dragons (1-13-2; 0-7 vs. CAA) Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in a game that will make or break their season.
The game was originally scheduled to be played October 7, but Hurricane Matthew forced the match to be moved to the end of regular season play.
At eight points in the CAA standings, the Cougars find themselves in a very simple predicament. Win and they're in, lose or draw and they're out. A tournament berth would pit the Cougars against either the William & Mary Tribe (10-6-2; 3-3-2 vs. CAA) or the UNCW Seahawks (8-5-2; 3-2-2 vs. CAA). Either contest would be on the road.
The Cougars come off a 2-1 win over Northeastern on their Senior Night game in which all three seniors who played for the College made their way on the stat sheet. Cesar Murillo finished off a free kick feed from Nicolas Jeausseran, while Nico Rittmeyer converted a cross from Adan Noel in the corner to put the Cougars up 2-0 at half. Brian Kilgallon was perfect in goal save for a Northeastern PK late in the contest.
The Cougars have gone 1-1-1 against Drexel in their three seasons in the CAA, having won last year 1-0 on the road. Martin Sedari scored the lone goal in that game on a cross from Khalil Abderahman to give CofC the victory. Kevin Shields was perfect with a seven-save shutout.
The Dragons have had a difficult season, having gone winless in conference play thus far. Since their lone win of the year, a 3-2 overtime win over Temple back in mid-September, the Dragons have lost 11-straight and have been outscored by opponents 25-2 over that span.
