Cougars Punch Ticket to CAA Tournament with 1-0 Win Over Drexel
11/1/2016 10:14:00 PM | Men's Soccer
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team (5-8-3; 3-3-2 vs. CAA) delivered with their season on the line Tuesday night, vanquishing the Drexel Dragons (1-14-2; 0-8 vs. CAA) 1-0 and securing their place in the 2016 CAA Tournament in the process.
• The Cougars dominated the shot-battle in the first half 7-1, with a few quality scoring chances not showing up on the stat sheet. It wasn't until the 52nd minute that the College finally broke through, when Vebjorn Krovel blasted a ball off a Drexel defender to send the ball up in the air and into the vicinity of a waiting Paul Burdick. The junior defender was falling down and off-balance, but that didn't stop him from getting a foot on the ball in the top corner of the box and sending it in past Tyler Afflerbach to score his first goal of the season.
• The Cougars were efficient in their attempts, with 10 of their 13 shots finding their way on target. Avery Ryan led the team with four shots (3 SOG), and to his credit, Afflerbach stood tall most of the night with a nine-save outing. Brian Kilgallon earned the shutout for CofC with only one save required of him to move to 2-1 on the season.
• The win sealed the Cougars second consecutive CofC berth, but it wasn't immediately clear who the College would face in the first round of the CAA Tournament. Elon and UNCW played one another in a simultaneous game that went to double overtime, and by virtue of a scoreless tie, the Cougars soon learned they would face the Seahawks in Wilmington in a 3/6 matchup.
"We did better in the second half than we did in the first half," head coach Ralph Lundy said. "In our games, the ball often takes some strange bounces. On the goal, Paul turned to the target and fired an amazing shot, and that was just a very, very skillful play. We could have probably scored some more after that, but credit to Drexel, they do a good job of getting ten players behind the ball, and they're hard to break down."
The Cougars will have the remainder of the week to prepare for the postseason before heading up the Carolina coast to face off with UNCW on November 5. A game time has not yet been made available, but what is known is that the winner would go on to face Delaware in a neutral site clash in Hempstead, N.Y.
