KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – College of Charleston freshman
Logan Sowell (Kershaw, S.C.) saved his best for last.
Â
Only four tournaments into his young career with the Cougars, he turned in his highest individual finish of the fall season and lowest 54-hole total shooting a 3-under par 213 on the final day of the East Bay Deli Classic hosted by Charleston Southern at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort's Turtle Point course.
Â
Sowell finished third overall in the 118-player tournament field with rounds of 71, 72 and and 70. He tied for third-best in birdies made (12) including four in the final round. Through all four fall tournaments Sowell put together a 72.67 stroke average – second only to senior All-American
William Rainey (Charlotte, N.C.), who finished one stroke behind and tied for fourth individually at -2.
Â
"What a great tournament and fall for
Logan Sowell," CofC Head Coach
Mark McEntire said. "He was excellent all semester and has put himself in position to be CAA Freshman of the Year.
William Rainey had a solid tournament. I know he is disappointed that he did not win, but he had a nice finish to the fall. He will be excited to play in the College All-America Golf Classic next week in El Paso."
Â
In the team standings, the Cougars closed out their fall season in third (+13) behind first-place Tennessee (+3) and runner-up Augusta (+7). It marked the team's third-consecutive Top 3 finish.
Â
"I was disappointed with our finish," McEntire said. "I really thought we would get the job done. You can't count 77 and expect to win. Having been in this position for three tournaments in a row is frustrating, but this team is really good. I know that we will improve during the offseason."
Â
CofC will return to action in the spring with the SunTrust Gator hosted by Florida on Feb. 18-19, 2017, at the Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla.
