Men’s Soccer Falls 2-1 to UD in CAA Semifinals

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The College of Charleston men's soccer team's season came to an end in the CAA Semifinals on Friday night, as the Cougars succumbed to Delaware 2-1 on a late goal.
• Much like their quarterfinal matchup last week against UCNW, the Cougars played over 70 scoreless minutes. It wasn't until Delaware took it's 20th shot, a header by Thibault Philippe in the 74th minute, that the Blue Hens were at last able to penetrate the stout Cougar defense.
• Five minutes later, UD keeper Todd Morton committed a foul in the box on a go-ahead goal opportunity to give the College a PK attempt. Leland Archer fired left and hit pay dirt for his second PK goal of the year. That tied the game at 1-1 with just over 10 to play. It was the Cougars' only shot on goal of the evening.
• CAA Player of the Year Guillermo Delgado came sweeping in wide on a break from right of goal, but Brian Kilgallon dove on it for the stuff. Just under a minute later, almost the exact same play developed for UD, but this time, Delgado popped the ball up over the lunging Kilgallon, regained possession, and chipped it home in the 89th minute to propel Delaware to the win.
• The Blue Hens finished the game out-shooting the College 24-5. Despite the shot disparity, Kilgallon was only called upon to contest six shots on frame. The junior keeper made four saves on the night.
"I'm incredibly proud of this team," head coach Ralph Lundy said. "Not just for how they played tonight, but for how they've gone at it the entire past month. Delaware is a heck of a team, and we battled them right to the end."
The Cougars finish the season 6-9-3 overall, having progressed deeper into the CAA Tournament than any other team in school history.
