Two Quick Goals Surge Cougars Past Seahawks in 2-1 Win

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team (6-8-3) pulled off the 2-1 upset over the No. 3 Seeded UNCW Seahawks (8-6-3) Saturday night, picking up the program's first CAA Tournament victory in school history and punching a semifinal matchup with the Delaware Blue Hens (10-7-1).
• The Cougars and Seahawks played 75 scoreless minutes of soccer, with both teams playing cautiously to avoid a costly mistake in such an important game. Suddenly, the game took a dramatic turn when Adan Noel launched a shot in off the post that ricocheted out to an open Avery Ryan, who buried it.
• The celebrations hadn't even died down on the CofC sideline when the College struck again. 37 seconds later, Avery Ryan sent in his own shot off the post, and it was Cornell Holland's chance to get on the board (76').

• Not to be outdone, UNCW responded with a goal just a minute and nine seconds later when David Lozano sent in a free kick in the 77th minute. UNCW went on to take a whopping four corners in the final four minutes and controlled the offensive pace, but Brian Kilgallon and the CofC defense managed to stand tall and preserve the 2-1 win.
• The game was extremely physical and scrappy, as the two teams combined for 35 fouls in the game. The College accounted for 13 fouls in the first half alone.
"UNCW was a great team this year, and they played like it tonight," head coach Ralph Lundy said. "Our guys came out crisp in the second half, and it was a total team effort. They left it all on the field tonight, and it was a great win."
The Cougars will advance in the CAA Tournament to the semifinal round, where they will face the Delaware Blue Hens in Hempstead, N.Y. That matchup is scheduled for Friday at 4:30 p.m.
