Cougars to Battle Blue Hens in CAA Tournament Semifinals

CHARLESTON, S.C. - After achieving their first CAA Tournament win in school history last weekend against UNCW, the College of Charleston men's soccer team (6-8-3) will look to keep that momentum going Friday in the semifinal round when they face the No. 2 seeded Delaware Blue Hens (10-7-1) at 4:30 p.m. at Hofstra soccer field.
Though the Cougars played a road contest in Hempstead earlier in the season, this will still be their first look at Hofstra Soccer Field. Their previous matchup with Hofstra was conducted at James M. Shuart Stadium as a result of the presidential debates forcing a venue change.
The Cougars managed to advance to the semifinals thanks to a 2-1 win over the Seahawks last Saturday in Wilmington. After a scoreless game through the first 73 minutes, the College struck fast and decisively with two goals in less than a minute. Avery Ryan scored one and assisted on the other, while Adan Noel picked up an assist and Cornell Holland scored the game-winner. UNCW managed to fight back with a goal of their own, but the Cougars stood tall in the final stanza to preserve the win. All three goals in the game came over a span of a minute and 46 seconds.
Delaware is led by CAA Player of the Year Guillermo Delgado, a senior from Spain with 11 goals and 8 assists on 46 shots, while Fede Prieto (7g) also factors in as a crucial piece of the Blue Hen attack. In net, Todd Morton has been the go-to option all season, and has pieced together 63 saves and seven shutouts in 18 starts. When the Cougars met UD earlier in the season, Morton earned the shutout as Delaware pushed to a 3-0 victory.
Mother Nature figures to play a role in the semifinal affair, with weather reports predicting temperatures dipping to the high 40s and wind gusts surpassing 20mph.
The winner of this neutral site matchup will face the winner of No. 1 seed Hofstra and No. 5 seed William & Mary, a game to be played following the Cougars' matchup with the Blue Hens.
