MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – A one-out, pinch-hit RBI double by freshman Logan McRae in the ninth tied the game and Ryan Brown's RBI single in the 12th lifted College of Charleston to a 3-2 win over Northeastern on Sunday at Patriots Point.
Trailing 2-1 with one away in the ninth, Danny Wondrack entered as a pinch-hitter and reached after being hit by a 3-2 pitch. After Clay Hunt entered as a pinch-runner, McRae laced a 1-2 pitch into right-center allowing Hunt to score from first. The Cougars loaded the bases with one out in the 12th when Brown lashed a single into left scoring Erven Roper, who got the rally started with a double. It was the fourth consecutive walk-off for CofC in which Roper has scored the winning run.
The Huskies (27-24, 10-10 CAA) got on the board in the first inning on an RBI single by Zach Perry. College of Charleston (27-23-1, 10-11) answered in the fifth on a solo home run from Dupree Hart, his second in as many games. With runners on the corners, Max Burt gave Northeastern the lead in the seventh on a safety squeeze.
Nathan Helvey got the start on the mound and struck out five batters over seven innings of work, but did not factor into the decision. The senior allowed two runs – one earned – on five hits. Eric Bauer tossed 4.1 frames in relief and fanned six hitters, while Justin Baker earned the win after recording the final two outs of the 12th.
The win sealed the series victory for the Cougars, the team's first since taking two-of-three from Elon on April 1-3.
College of Charleston hosts Furman on Tuesday in the final midweek game of the year. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
