CHARLESTON, S.C. – In its season opener, the College of Charleston volleyball team (1-1) split its Hampton Inn Charleston/West Ashley CofC Invitational matches with a 3-0 sweep of UT Martin (25-18, 25-22, 25-16) and 3-0 setback to South Carolina (25-22, 25-19, 26-14) on Friday night at TD Arena.
Match #1: College of Charleston 3, UT Martin 0
Inside the Stats: Sophomore setter Allison Beckman (27 assists) and junior college transfer Riana Brennan (eight kills and 10 digs) in her CofC debut.
Coach Kepner Thoughts: “We played really well in our first match. We were consistent and distributed the ball very well which allowed us to play a lot of people and put a lot of pressure on UT Martin.”
Match #2: South Carolina 3, College of Charleston 0
Inside the Stats: Sophomore middle blocker and preseason CAA Honorable Mention selection Kennedy Madison (11 kills) and Beckman (19 assists) and sophomore transfer Elizabeth Hurring (13 assists).
Players of the Match: Freshman outside hitter Lauren Freed provided a spark of energy for the Cougars with five kills and six digs against South Carolina. Freshman outside hitter Maddie LeGrande came off the bench in her collegiate debut and Elizabeth Hurring ran a really good offense for CofC in the third set versus the Gamecocks.
Coach Kepner Thoughts: “The positives were, we played point-for-point with a really good, physical SEC team (in South Carolina). The thing we have do better at is ball control and putting pressure on our opponents. I felt all the pressure was all on us and South Carolina could play relaxed, because all of our errors.”
Quick Turnaround: The Cougars will put the USC loss behind them and close out tournament play with Binghamton on Saturday, Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. (ET) at TD Arena.
