Cougars Dispatched 2-1 in Overtime

SEATTLE, WASH. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team (2-2-1) were seven minutes and change shy of taking the upset win over Seattle (3-3), but the Redhawks struck back late and then again in overtime to hand the Cougars the 2-1 loss.
• The Cougars were the beneficiaries of a late own-goal in the 83rd minute to put them up 1-0 in the waning minutes. Nico Rittmeyer passed the ball into the box from left of keeper, looking for Avery Ryan. A Redhawk defender got in the way to break things up, but wound up deflecting the ball into the SU net.
• Unfortunately for the Cougars, there would be more scoring to come in the 83rd minute. The Redhawks came marching down the field immediately after play resumed, and Jeff Rose launched the attack. Shields came out to challenge and was successful in doing so, but the subsequent loose ball took an unfriendly bounce, and Ozzie Ramos cleaned it up to tie the game just 30 seconds after the own-goal.
• In overtime, the Cougars committed a foul in their own zone, leading to a Alex Roldan free kick from five yards outside the box, just to the left of frame. Roldan's attempt was spectacular, bending the ball around the wall of defenders and back around near-side to beat Shields and give SU the win.
• The Cougars did an admirable job weathering the early storm, as Seattle controlled the pace for nearly the entirely of the first half. The Redhawks closed out the half up 10-2 in shots, and finished with a 22-10 edge. Despite this, the College settled for a higher percentage of quality looks, only trailing 6-5 in shots on goal.
With the loss, the Cougars fall to 2-2-1 on the season. They'll need to collect themselves quickly, as a Sunday showdown with the (RV) Washington Huskies awaits them in less than 48 hours. That contest is slated for 4 p.m.
