Cougars Sweep A1 and A2 Doubles Championships

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Though Mother Nature brought a premature end to Sunday's competition, the College of Charleston women's tennis team wrapped up the CofC Invitational in style Sunday with big performances in doubles play.
Mara Argyriou and Christi Woodson were crowned A1 Doubles champions following a pair of hard-fought matches. The two earned a trip to the finals by beating Annika Sillaupaa and Sabrina Barisano of UNCW, earning a crack at Samford's Ellie Gerlach and Grace Jennings for all the marbles. The match required an extra game to decide, but the two managed the 7-5 win to secure the title.
Liza Fieldsend and Helena Nyikos followed suit in the A2 bracket, picking up wins over Carolina Meregali and Danielle Peele of Stetson (6-2) of Stetson as well as Alexa Tiefel and Maria Khomchenko of CCU (6-2) to win the A2 crown. It was Fieldsend's second doubles fall championship as a Cougar, the last one coming in 2015 alongside Rachel McNeely in the CofC Invitational's A1 bracket.
Freshman Anastasia Palaska also reached a championship match alongside temporary partner Thai Thompson of UNCW after the two did away with Alexandra Lee and Briana Bodner of Charlotte by a score of 6-4. However, the championship round against UNCW's Hollie Champion and Xandra Fougner proved to be too tough, as Palaska and company fell 6-4.
Palaska was one of two Cougars to complete a singles match before the weather dictated the end of play, beating Samford's Elsa Pool in the B1 bracket 6-3, 6-4. Christi Woodson was the other, steamrolling Sofia Ferding of Stetson 6-0, 6-0 to claim third in A2 singles.
The Cougars next action of the Fall season for the Cougars comes on October 14 through 16, when Liza Fieldsend will represent the program at the Oracle ITA Junior Masters Championship in Malibu, Calif.
