CONWAY, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's soccer (3-3) team showed no signs of slowing down from their ruthless tear on Sunday, notching a road-win over in-state rival Coastal Carolina (2-3-1) by a score of 3-0.
• Laura Ortega finished the game with two goals, including the game winner. On the first, Sara Deutsch robbed the ball from a Chanticleer defender to the right of the box, send a bouncing pass into the slot, where Ortega left her feet to poke it home five minutes into the game. The second was the mirror image of the first, with Jessica Schifer charging in from left of the keeper to feed Ortega who was again waiting in front to bang it home. Ortega's point total rises to eight, which surpasses Schifer's seven to make her the new team scoring leader.
• Sarah Blakely was the beneficiary of a lapse in concentration from CCU keeper Becca Austin. Blakely sent in a feed from 45 yards out in hopes of pushing the offensive tempo. The lob found its way on net, where Austin dropped the ball into her own net to give Blakely the goal.
• Lauren Killian came up big for the Cougars in her third consecutive shutout, pushing her streak to 275 minutes. She was credited with four saves on the evening, and on multiple occasions rose above the mass of humanity around her to snag the ball out of the air to break up set piece scoring opportunities. Bailie Fout was inserted in relief with 15 minutes to play in the game.
• The Cougars have been on an absolute tear, outscoring opponents 10-0 in their last three straight games. The last time they surrendered a goal was in the 58th minute of their match with Texas on August 26th.
"It was another really good performance tonight,” head coach Christian Michner said. “We were very organized defensively and didn't give away many dangerous opportunities. Lauren Killian and Bailie Fout combining for another shutout speaks to the confidence that we have in both players at the keeper position. They were flawless all night. Scoring three goals on the road is impressive and I am very proud of our entire 90 minutes tonight. A total team performance."
"Laura Ortega dominated the game for us from the outset,” Michner said. “She is so dangerous and can punish the other team in many different ways. Tonight she was on a different level than anyone else out there. She scored two excellent goals and really gave us so much confidence going forward.”
The Cougars return to the Lowcountry, and will be back in action next Friday when the Stetson Hatters (1-2-2) come to town. That contest is slated for 7 p.m. at Patriots Point.
