Cougars Shot Salvo Stuns Stetson in 1-0 Win

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – After an endless barrage of shots failed to connect for the College of Charleston women's soccer team (4-3), Jessica Schifer was finally able to hammer home the game-winner on the team's 24th shot of the game to give the Cougars the 1-0 win over the Stetson Hatters (1-4-2).

• Schifer registered a whopping 10 shots over the course of the game, and in the 83rd minute, had a beautiful apparent goal stripped away by an offsides call. A minute later, Laura Ortega had a free kick opportunity above the box to the left of the keeper. Ortega careened the ball off a defender, and Schifer was at home in the box to punch it home.

“I was proud of myself for being able to create shots, but I have to admit I was getting pretty frustrated not being able to get one with so many chances,” Schifer said. ”Laura was really smart with the way she played that free kick. I was wide open on the deflection, and even though it wasn't the most cleanly-struck ball, I got lucky and it went in.”

• Schifer and Ortega both extended their points-scoring streak to four straight games, and are tied with one another for the CofC scoring lead at nine points apiece.

• Lauren Killian wasn't tested often with only two saves on the night, but both were of a high degree of difficulty. She has not been scored against since August 26th when the Cougars played the Texas Longhorns, and her shutout streak currently sits at 365 minutes.

• The Cougars have been the epitome of dominant over the last four games, having outscored their opponents 11-0 over that span.

“I was happy with my team over the course of the game for all the chances we crated,” head coach Christian Michner said. “Jessica and Laura are some special players who complement each other really well. Jessica's like a freight train when she gets down low, while Laura's a little more crafty and cheeky with the ball. They understand each other well, and neither one is afraid to pull the trigger.”

“Collectively I thought it was a great effort on the back end,” Michner said. “Meredith Tunney holds it down for us on defense, she's a rock and she has been all season. Lauren Killian broke up some opportunities on set pieces, and they had a couple of good chances. I'm really happy with our work on that end.”

The College will have a quick turn-around before heading to the west side of town on Sunday to square off with The Citadel Bulldogs (3-1) at the Washington Light Infantry Field.
