Cougars Fall 7-0 to (RV) Demon Deacons in Opener

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The (RV) Wake Forest Demon Deacons proved to be too much for the College to handle in their season-opener Monday, as the Cougars succumbed 7-0.
The combination of Liza Fieldsend and Rachel McNeely returned to the No. 1 doubles spot for the first time since the Shape Magazine Invitational last March, but the two couldn't find an answer for Kimmy Guerin and Anna Ulyashchenko, who prevailed 6-1. Christi Woodson and Mara Argyriou teamed up in the No. 2 spot while Anastasia Palaska and Helena Nyikos occupied the third flight, but Wake Forest swept through doubles play 3-0.
Argyriou found the most success for the College in singles play, squaring off against No. 61 Emma Davis in the second flight. The sophomore won the opening set 6-4, but Davis rebounded 6-4 in the second flight in the only match that reached three sets. In the super tiebreak, Davis proved she deserved her ranking, pulling off the 10-4 win to take the match.
McNeely had a good outing of her own, challenging Joanna Zalewski in the fourth flight, but ultimately falling 6-2, 6-4.
The Cougars won't be back in action until January 27, when they host USC Upstate at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point.
