Heffron’s Golden Goal Slays Dragons in OT

PHILADELPHIA – The College of Charleston men's soccer team (6-5-1; 3-1-2) dominated the possession battle all night long against the Drexel Dragons (2-9-1; 1-4-1), and capped the game off with a game-winning goal less than a minute into overtime on Saturday night at Vidas Field.
• The Cougars got control of the ball early in the overtime period, with Ben Tansley taking control of it at midfield. The freshman turned and pushed ahead, finding Eli Dent running into the corner flats. Dent fired into the box, Tucker Heffron was there to catch a piece of it with his head, and the ball was in the back of the net off the post in the 91st minute.
• CofC started the game as they finished, with scoring. Just 25 seconds into the game, Drexel committed a foul in the box, leading to a Leland Archer penalty kick that went off the keeper's glove and in to put CofC ahead 1-0.
• The Cougars dominated the possession battle with 20 shots to Drexel's nine. CofC had many quality scoring chances throughout the game, and could have won by a much more lopsided score if not for an excellent night from Jacob Jordan, who made ten saves in defeat for the Dragons.
• Drexel wound up tying the game and forcing overtime in the 77th minute, when Mathias Ebbesen fired a blast from beyond the box that painted the top right corner past a diving Kevin Shields.
• With the win, the Cougars advance to second place in the conference with 11 points, just one point back of first place UNCW.
The Cougars will compete in their final non-conference affair of the regular season on Wednesday, when they hit the road to take on Winthrop.
