CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston men's soccer team (6-5-2) embarks northward for its final regular season non-conference game of the year, when they head to Rock Hill to face off with the Winthrop Eagles (3-8-1).
The Cougars are unbeaten in their last five contests, which are headlined by their upset win over No. 15 UNCW on the road by a score of 2-1. Senior midfielder Eli Dent led the team with a game-winning goal, a game-winning assist, and another assist that helped lift the Cougars over the Seahawks and Drexel Dragons, and also solidified him as the CAA Player of the Week. Dent leads the team on offense with three goals, four assists and 25 shots.
Since joining NCAA Division I back in 1991, the Cougars are 8-3 against Winthrop. The last time the two teams met was two years ago, a game that the College won by a score of 1-0 at Furman's Diadora/Spinx Tournament. Jake Nelson got the game winner in that one thanks to a feed from Dent.
Winthrop has lost six of their last seven contests, with their lone win coming on the road against Big South rival Longwood. Max Hasenstab is the team's unquestioned offensive leader with seven goals and two assists on the year, while Kenneth Perkinson is the Eagles' keeper of choice at three shutouts and a .730 save percentage for the year.
The Cougars go into the match in second place in the CAA, where they will remain after the game no matter what happens with every other CAA team engaged in non-conference play as well this week.
