Cougars Shut Out Eagles in 1-0 Victory
10/18/2017 9:37:00 PM | Men's Soccer
ROCK HILL, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team (7-5-2) dominated the possession battle for the entire night, and one first half-goal was enough to carry the Cougars to the 1-0 win over Winthrop (3-9-1).
• A hustle-play from Ben Tansley led to the freshman's first goal of his career as well as the victory for the Cougars. A long feed found a streaking Tansley in the 34th minute, and the freshman popped the ball up and over the challenging keeper. He then ran around the netminder to the ball, poking it home past a sliding defender to put CofC up for good.
• The Brit managed two more shots on the game, and very nearly added to his total in the second half when he chipped another shot in that bounced off the post and simply remained on the goal-line until a Winthrop defender retreated back to clear it.
• Kevin Shields had a quiet night, facing seven shots and making two shutouts to pick up the fifth shutout of his season. Vebjorn Krovel and Leland Archer played full 90-minute loads in front of him.
• As a team, the Cougars dominated the Eagles on offense with 14 shots and six corners to Winthrop's seven and one. WU didn't record their first shot of the game until nearly the 30-minute mark.
• With every team in the CAA occupied with non-conference action this mid-week, the Cougars stand pat at No. 2 in the conference, just one point back of UNCW.
CofC returns home to face the Delaware Blue Hens on Saturday at 7 p.m.
