Cougars Turn Heads at ITA Carolina Regional

CARY, N.C. – The College of Charleston men's tennis team was well-represented at this weekend's ITA Carolina Regionals, which was hosted by Duke University.

Juan Estevarena had the biggest weekend for the Cougars, battling all the way through to the round of 16 with wins over Campbell's Dustin Werner (6-0, 6-3), USC Upstate's Ankush Arora (6-4, 7-5) and No. 13 Julian Zlobinsky of Wake Forest (6-3, 6-3). It wasn't until the Argentinian met Zlobinsky's teammate No. 25 Bar Botzer that Estevarena finally finished his run. He and Benedikt Henning also picked up a 6-2, 6-2 doubles win against a pairing from Davidson.

Ryan Khan also had a commendable weekend after falling in the opening match. The senior rallied back with wins against Clemson's Marshall Dagostine (7-5, 3-6, 10-7) and Elon's Mario Paccini (5-7, 6-3, 10-7) to go undefeated in back draw singles play.

Henning defeated Davidson's Shamael Chaudhry, while Easton Thomas eliminated Gardner-Webb's Millen Hurrion to round out the CofC singles wins for the weekend. Thomas also teamed up with Alec Angradi for a 6-3, 7-6(0) doubles win as well, dispatching a pairing from Gardner-Webb.

"We had some great chances this weekend and competed with some of the region's best players," head coach Jay Bruner said. "Even though it was an individual event, I think we competed and played like a team. The upperclassmen looked experienced and took advantage of their opportunities in big matches, while the sophomores competed well in singles and doubles, and came away with some great experience in tight moments."

The Cougars have one more Fall tournament on the schedule, as they will host the CofC Invite on the weekend of October 27-29 at Patriots Point.
