ELON, N.C. - The College of Charleston cross country program finished fourth on the men's side and sixth on the women's side at the CAA Championships hosted by Elon University, and saw their first CAA All-Conference performance in two years.
Hayden DiBona paced the Cougars once again with a time of 25:27.47 on the challenging course, which earned him conference recognition as a result of his seventh place finish. His performance resulted in the seventh-fastest 8K time submitted in school history. He becomes the first CofC runner to earn All-Conference acclaim since Cara Butcher did it in 2015, and the first male to do it since Mackenzie Johnston in 2014.
"Hayden did an outstanding job," head coach Amy Seago said. "I'm proud of him and how he represented the College. Both teams put it out there and gave it their all today."
Freshmen Tess Masselink and Declan Hines finishes tantalizingly close to All-Conference acclaim as well, finishing 13th overall with times of 22:06.35 and 26:05.49 in their respective races, just one spot out of CAA acclaim. Masselink's effort in particular was very strong, ranking as the 12th fastest 6K time in program history.
Crew Kosiorek (27:00.66, 28th), Evan Peirce (27:09.41, 31st) and Sam Beattie (27:31.70) rounded out the scoring for the Cougars. Their team score of 98 points was just five back of Elon for third place.
On the women's side, Cate Ambrose finished behind Masselink with a time of 22:27.37 to take 22nd. Tori Churchill was close behind in 27th with a time of 22:35.45, while Ellen Feringa (22:45.32, 33rd) and Marissa Small-Towns (23:39.88) closed things out for the College. The women posted 138 team points, finishing 16 points back of fifth place Northeastern.
William & Mary captured it's 18th consecutive CAA championship on the men's side with a score of 23. On the women's side however, James Madison was able to snap the Tribe's streak of five straight championships with a score of 26. W&M's JP Trojan was the men's individual champion (25:01.94), while JMU's Nora Raher (21:26.20) took home the honors for the women.
The College now sets its sites on the NCAA Southeast Regionals, which will take place in Charlottesville, Va.
