Nicholson’s Two-Goal Outburst Lifts Cougars Past Ospreys

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team (3-5-2) found its third win of the season on Wednesday, scoring once in each half to vanquish North Florida (1-8-1) by a score of 2-1.
• Jake Nicholson scored his first collegiate goal in the 31st minute with the help of Eli Dent. The senior sent a well-placed cross through the box that found Nicholson streaking to the corner to head the ball into the turf and bouncing past the reach of the keeper. Despite carrying the 1-0 lead into the half, the Ospreys controlled the pace with a 7-2 shot advantage through the first 45.
• Nicholson struck once again in the 72nd minute after Scotty Frantz won a 50-50 ball in the middle of the field off a UNF goal kick. Frantz advanced it to the wing on a pass to Tucker Heffron, who quickly passed it to a bolting Heffron in the center, who chipped it home.
• UNF finally cracked the scoreboard six minutes later in the 79th minute, as four players were able to set up in the box on a broken play to set up an AJ Williams goal. It was the only blemish on an otherwise stellar performance from Kevin Shields, who put up eight saves over the course of the game. Over the last two games, Shields has allowed just one goal while pawing away 15 saves.
• All told, the Ospreys won the shot battle 17-7, but the Cougars were the more gentlemanly team with seven fouls to UNF's 11.
The Cougars now return home to resume CAA action against James Madison on Saturday at 7 p.m.
