Dent’s Late Goal Propels Cougars Past Dukes 2-1

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team (4-5-2; 1-1-2) appeared destined for overtime in a 1-1 deadlock with the James Madison Dukes (4-5-3; 1-1-2), but a goal by Eli Dent in the waning seconds lifted the Cougars to their first CAA win of the season on Saturday at Patriots Point.
• With time ticking away in regulation, Jake Nicholson sent a cross into the box from short distance, where it found fellow Englishman Ben Tansley, who got a foot on the ball to get a shot on target. JMU keeper Sean Connolly was able to stuff the attempt, but the ball trickled out to his left, where a waiting Eli Dent capitalized with a game-winner with just 17 seconds remaining in the game.
• Dent also contributed on the first goal of the game, which was awfully similar to the game-winner. In the 60th minute, it was Dent who fired a shot that was stuffed, leading to Nicholson chipping in his third goal of the year from short distance off the rebound. Prior to that, Nicholson had the best chance of the entire first half, blasting a free kick from the top of the box just wide.
• JMU was able to tie the game in the 80th minute after CofC committed a penalty in their own box. Manuel Ferriol fired the penalty kick to Kevin Shields' right, and though the CofC keeper guessed correctly, the ball still found the back of the net past the outstretched mitt. All told, it was the only blemish on an otherwise quiet night for Shields, who was only called upon to make two saves on the night.
• Dent fired five of the Cougars' 15 shots on the night. The College also forced three times as many corner kick opportunities as their opponents, taking nine to the Dukes' three.
• The win propels the Cougars to fourth place in the CAA with five points on the year. They narrowly trail Hofstra and Delaware, who sit in second and third place with seven points apiece.
Having now won two straight for the first time this season, the Cougars will look to carry the momentum on the road with them this Wednesday, when they visit the No. 16 UNCW Seahawks.
