HARRISONBURG, VA. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team (6-5-1; 1-2-1) snatched a victory on the road Thursday night, as
Laura Ortega scored a golden goal to lift the Cougars to the 1-0 win over the James Madison Dukes (7-7; 2-3).
• With less than three minutes to play in the second overtime, JMU keeper Olivia Miller sent a shallow clearance under pressure which was collected by
Leah Deutsch, who sent it ahead to
Kalli Vogel in the corner. Vogel launched a cross to
Alyssa Beck, who fired a shot that was initially saved. However, it bounced out wide to
Laura Ortega who finished the play from up close to give the Cougars the win (108').
•
Genevieve Henderson earned her sixth shutout of the season with a five-save effort, tying her for the sixth-most shutouts in a season by a CofC keeper in program history.
• CofC had never previously defeated the Dukes in school history, winning their first encounter in six attempts since joining the CAA back in 2013.
• The Cougars overcame being called offsides eight times on the evening, and were also out-shot 14-12. They made up for it by drawing JMU into ten fouls, as well as winning the corner kick battle 8-4.
• With the win, the Cougars rise to four points in the CAA race, tying them for seventh place with UNCW.
CofC will now return home for a Sunday showdown with the Towson Tigers.
