2017 (Senior): Received All-CAA Third Team Accolades ... Was named CAA Defender of the Week following her stellar play against Presbyterian and Charleston Southern ... Drew 14 starts and played 1255 minutes of action, logging a full 90-minute load on nine occasions ... Recorded five shots on the year, and had a shot on goal on the road against James Madison ... Was instrumental in helping goalkeeper Genevieve Henderson achieve a 427-minute shutout streak, the fourth-longest in school history
2016 (Junior): Saw 642 minutes of play in 16 games over the course of the year, earning four starts on the season ... Finished the year with three goals on three shots on goal, the fourth-most on the team, doing her damage against Charleston Southern, Jacksonville and Northeastern ... Was responsible for converting the game-winner against Jacksonville, a header in the 31st minute ... Finished the year with 14 shots, firing a season-high three against Charleston Southern
2015 (Sophomore): Named the team MVP by her coaches and teammates… Appeared in, and started in, all 18 game for the College, racking up a team-high 1650 minutes… Recorded five shots, with four of those being shots on goal.
2014 (Freshman): A key cog for the Cougar defense in her first season starting all 19 games... Tallied 1703 minutes for an average of about 89 minutes per game... Recorded her first career goal and assist for a total of 3 points... Placed six shots on goal out of ten attempts for a .600 shot-on-goal percentage.
Before CofC: Played with Burlington Tornados ’96, Canada’s No. 1 ranked club team… aided the Tornados to championships in the elite division of the Disney Tournament, PDA, UMBRO and Crossroads Showcases, in addition to the Ontario Provincial Cup and Ontario Youth Soccer League… five-time Athlete of the Year at Aurora High School… participated in the Canadian National Training Program in addition to serving as a regular on the Ontario Provincial team, which she aided to a national championship in 2012.
Michner on Speller-Drews: "Rio is a fantastic player and hails from the top youth team in Canada, the Burlington Tornados. She will make an immediate impact for us on the back line, and her many qualities make her a very versatile player. Her experience playing on the most successful team and at the highest level of play in Canadian Youth Soccer will make her transition to the college game a smooth one.
