Archer’s Pair Lifts Cougars Past Elon to CAA Semifinals

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team (8-5-4) came back from a one-goal deficit to vanquish the Elon Phoenix (7-5-6) by a score of 2-1, progressing to the CAA Semifinals for the second straight year.
• Senior Leland Archer scored two goals on the night, the first a header off a set-piece in the 28th minute thanks to a feed from Jake Nicholson, which evened the game at 1-1. Archer later scored on a penalty kick opportunity for his fifth goal (66') of the season.
• Elijah Agu got the scoring started, striking in the 23rd minute less than a minute after checking into the game. Agu received a feed from Jack Willbye at the top of the box, and fired a blast into the bottom-left corner past a sprawling Kevin Shields. The CofC keeper recovered nicely, pawing away four saves through the remainder of the game to keep Elon at bay.
• The College controlled the possession battle for much of the game, but only enjoyed a narrow 12-10 advantage in shots. It was a very scrappy affair that featured five yellow cards, four of which were assessed to Elon.
• The Cougars extend their unbeaten streak to nine games, which coincidentally began with a draw on the road against Elon. It is the longest unbeaten streak the program has submitted since 2010, when the Cougars ripped off 12 in a row before qualifying for the NCAA Tournament.
With the win, the Cougars qualify for their second consecutive CAA Semifinals. Next Friday, they will travel to Harrisonburg, Va. to match up with the No. 2 seeded UNCW Seahawks at James Madison's Sentara Park.
