HARRISONBURG, VA. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team (8-6-4) saw its season come to an end on Friday, allowing a goal with just two seconds left in overtime as the UNCW Seahawks (11-6) advanced by way of a 2-1 win.
• Tucker Heffron scored the first goal of the game in the 21st minute, firing a blast from the top of the box on a feed from Jake Nicholson that found its way to the corner of the net. The Cougars were outshot 6-3 in the period, but managed to enter the locker room up 1-0.
• UNCW tied the game in the 61st minute. The ball found it's way into the CofC box for an extended period, and after the Cougars failed to clear it, UNCW eventually managed to score thanks to a strike from Julio Moncada.
• The game progressed to overtime, where neither team seemed to capitalize in a meaningful way for the majority of the period. Then in the waning seconds of the period, UNCW launched the ball into Kevin Shields, the ball trickled back, and Emil Elveroth was able to pound it home before the buzzer sounded.
• Shields finished his CofC career with a five-save effort. Of particular interest was a save he made in the closing minutes of the first half, when Vebjorn Krovel fell down back-pedaling which allowed a break for UNCW's David Lozano. He fired from point-blank range, and a sprawling Shields was able to get his right foot on the ball to keep the CofC advantage going into the half.
• The Cougars unbeaten streak ended at nine games with the loss. It was their longest such-streak since 2010, when they went 12 in a row en route to an NCAA Tournament appearance.
UNCW will go on to the CAA Finals on Sunday, where they will face tonight's winner between James Madison and William & Mary.
