Cougars Drop to Eagles in Tough 4-3 Loss

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team (1-2) dropped its first home match of the season on Saturday, falling to the defending Big South champions Winthrop (3-1) by a score of 4-3.
It was a brisk and windy afternoon, and got gradually colder as the day progressed. Winthrop struck first in doubles play in the top flight, but the Liza Fieldsend and Rachel McNeely responded with a 6-4 win in flight two against Caitlin Cridland and Alisa Soloveva. CofC couldn't take the point however, as Sarah Zschunke and Helena Nyikos narrowly surrendered the 7-5 flight three contest.
The Cougars quickly tied the match 1-1 when freshman Anastasia Palaska steamrolled Alya Moulrad 6-2, 6-0 in flight six, but Winthrop regained the edge as Fieldsend fell 6-4, 6-0 in the top flight. The College again tied things up when Helena Nyikos knocked off Megan Kaufman 6-4, 6-4 in flight four, but the match was back in Winthrop's favor as Mara Argyriou fell 7-5, 6-1 on court three.
Winthrop ultimately seized the win when Soloveva defeated Christi Woodson in a hard-fought flight two matchup by the score of 7-5, 6-4. Rachel McNeely rallied back from a 0-6 defeat in set one to come back 7-5, 6-2 to beat Aida Kelic in the fifth flight, but it was too late.
"This was very similar to last year's tough loss to Winthrop," Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. "I saw clear improvement from our players from what they've picked up in practice. We've just got to get some of our players healthy and get them out to practice more."
The Cougars will return to action on February 16 against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.
