MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team (2-2) rebounded back to their winning ways Thursday, dispatching Coastal Carolina by a score of 6-1.
The Cougars shuffled their doubles lineups, which resulted in Mara Argyriou and Anastasia Palaska playing together for the first time together all season. After CofC went down 1-0 with a loss in the third flight, Palaska and Argyriou evened things up in the second flight with a 6-2 win over Romane Delay and Marie Babayan. Liza Fieldsend and Rachel McNeely won the doubles point for CofC by dispatching Rylie Cox and Sara Bondar in the top flight to give CofC the 1-0 advantage.
Helena Nyikos suited up for her last match for a while, as the Austrian was set to have a lower body operation later in the week that would keep her sidelined for a while. Nyikos was the first player to score in singles play, powering past Babayan 6-1, 6-0 to give the College the 2-0 lead.
"I wanted to go out on top before I had to go down for a little while," Nyikos said. "It was a really great effort by the entire team today, and I was really proud of all my teammates."
Liza Fieldsend finished up in flight one shortly thereafter with a 6-1, 6-2 win to put CCU on the brink with the 3-0 CofC lead. Mara Argyriou picked up the clinching point, eliminating Delay 6-4, 6-3 in the third flight to seal the win for the College.
Though the match was already decided, that didn't prevent two Cougars in the lower flights from scoring thrilling come-from-behind wins. McNeely went down 6-2 in the opening set against Maria Khomchenko before bouncing back to win the second set 6-4 and the ensuing super-tiebreak 10-5 to claim the point. Palaska meanwhile traded 6-4 sets with Bondar before dominating her 10-1 in the super-tiebreak to give the College its sixth point of the day.
The Cougars will have nine days before their next action, a home double-header on February 25 against CAA-rival William & Mary and Savannah State.
