Three-Day Test Against App State, UMass, Samford Awaits CofC

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's tennis team (5-4) hosts three matches in three days this week, as the Cougars are slated to take on Appalachian State (4-11) on Monday at 1:30 p.m., UMass (5-5) on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m., and Samford (8-4) on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.

CofC suffered a 7-0 setback to No. 3 North Carolina on Saturday. Mara Argyriou had the best day of any Cougar, staving off defeat in her doubles matchup before facing off against No. 78 Makenna Jones. Argyriou took her opponent to three sets, but the Tar Heel got the best of her by a score of 4-6, 6-1, 10-5.

Argyriou, Liza Fieldsend and Rachel McNeely have paced the Cougars in singles play this season, with all three boasting dual records of 6-3. Fieldsend has also been the Cougars' most effective doubles player this year with a record of 4-3.

The Cougars are familiar with all three of their upcoming opponents, sporting a 19-1 all-time record against the Mountaineers, a 3-2 clip against the Minutewomen, and a 10-1 mark against Samford. CofC faced off against both App State and UMass last season, beating ASU 6-1, but falling to UMass 4-3. The College hasn't faced Samford since 2013 in a dual match, but met them as recently as the fall of 2016.

The Mountaineers come off a 7-14 season last year which saw them fall in the opening round of the Sun Belt Tournament to Louisiana Monroe. App State has lost its four straight matches, most recently a 4-3 heartbreaker to Gardner-Webb on Saturday. The Mountaineers have been potent in the lower singles flights this season, with Taylor Bygrave sporting a team-best 7-5 record playing primarily at the No. 5 position. Bygrave was also the lone-Mountaineer to win a singles match against the College in their meeting last year, dispatching Diana Colen in flight six (6-1, 7-6).

UMass comes off a 14-7 mark in 2015-16, but stand at 5-5 through ten matches this season. They will enter Tuesday's match looking to correct a two-game skid, with their most recent loss coming at the hands of No. 23 Dartmouth. Ana Yrazusta is the team's most effective all-around player, sporting a 7-2 singles record after playing primarily in flight three, as well as a 8-1 doubles record with Janja Kovacevic as the team's flight two pairing. Yrazusta played in top-flight singles last season, where she was able to defeat Liza Fieldsend in three sets (6-4, 2-6, 6-4).

Samford has the best overall record of the three teams at 8-4, and have won three of their last four matches, including a 4-3 win over Lipscomb on Saturday. At 9-3 in singles play in flights five and six, Annika Hepp boasts the best record on the team. Close behind her are Arianna Beltrame in flight four and Elsa Pool in flight three, both at 7-5 on the season.
