Martin, Violette Pitch Cougars Past Liberty

Auburn, Ala. – Sam Martin and Brittany Violette combined on a three-hitter, and Lexee Emanuel started a three-run rally with a solo homer in the College of Charleston's 3-1 win over Liberty on the second day of the Wilson/DeMarini Classic at Auburn.

The Cougars (8-7) lost their second game of the day to Auburn by a score of 14-0 and conclude their weekend trip with another game against the host Tigers on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Martin went the first 4.2 innings, allowing two hits and the Liberty run on a solo homer by Amber Bishop in the top of the fourth, while fanning five including the side in the third. Violette entered with two on and two out in the fifth and got a ground out to escape the jam.

Trailing by that single run in bottom of the fourth, the Cougars answered when Emanuel launched her second home run of the season, a one-out drive to center that tied the game. Katie Padilla singled and Kelly Sinclair reached on an error before the pair pulled off a double steal.

Dexlie Inman, making her first start of the season at second base, broke the tie with a sacrifice fly, and Taylor DuPree capped the three-run uprising with a single down the left field line. Padilla and DuPree both had two of CofC's five hits.

The Flames threatened in the sixth, loading the bases with one out, but Violette was equal to the task and induced a pair of pop outs to keep the Cougars in front. She then worked a 1-2-3 seventh to gain her first save of the year.

Auburn (17-2) scored seven times in the first and finished with 18 hits in its five-inning win. Madi Brown had the only two hits for the Cougars.
