CHARLESTON, S.C. --- Devon Rachel (Louisville, Ky.) and
Lauren Freed (Troy, Ohio) each posted a double-double, and
Krissy Mummey (Hudson, Ohio) matched a career-high with eight blocks to lead the College of Charleston volleyball team to a straight-set sweep of USC Upstate in TD Arena on Friday evening.
The College (1-0) won the match by scores of 25-9, 25-20, and 25-12, while tallying 45 kills and 12 blocks. Charleston held USC Upstate (0-1) to 23 kills and four blocks, as the Cougars finished the night with a 78-60 advantage in digs. The Cougars sided-out at a 69-percent clip on the night – including a 76 percent (10-13) mark in the third frame.
Rachel paced the Cougars with 12 kills to go along with 13 digs, while Freed recorded her sixth career double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs in addition to a career-best five blocks. Mummey added nine kills and seven digs, while posting career-highs of eight blocks and three service aces.
Kennedy Madison (Evansville, Ind.) chipped in seven smashes and four blocks, as
Allison Beckman (Apex, N.C.) dished out 33 assists and tallied eight digs.
McKala Rhodes (Charleston, S.C.) recorded a match-high 19 digs. Freshman
Logan Manusky (San Diego, Calif.) notched 11 digs in her collegiate debut, while redshirt freshman
Meghan Murphy (Orange, Calif.)'s first career kill came via an overpass that found a hole in the Upstate defense for match point.
Natalie Tucker (Isle of Palms, S.C.) marked her CofC debut with six digs and three assists.
Rebecca Shearer led the way for Upstate with six kills, while Madison Hawke posted a double-double with 17 assists and 12 digs. Kaleigh Kelley and Montana Swanson tallied 17 and 11 digs, respectively.
The Cougars will wrap up the weekend at the Hampton Inn and Suites Classic on Saturday, when they take on Tennessee State at 1:00 pm and Denver at 7:00 pm in TD Arena.
