Cougars Split With Tennessee State, Denver On Saturday

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston volleyball team started the day Saturday with a 3-1 win over Tennessee State, before falling to Denver in the evening session to finish the weekend with a 2-1 record. Lauren Freed (Troy, Ohio) posted a pair of double-doubles, and Krissy Mummey (Hudson, Ohio) tallied 27 kills and 11 blocks to pace the Cougars.
 
The College (2-1) defeated Tennessee State (0-2) by scores of 23-25, 25-15, 25-18, and 25-12 behind a career match from Freed, which featured her third straight double-double with 21 kills and 17 digs. The sophomore also added a career-high four service aces to go along with a .378 hitting percentage.
 
Charleston combined for 67 kills and a .327 hitting percentage, while holding the Tigers to 45 kills and a .193 clip on the attack. The Cougars posted 68 digs compared to 54 for Tennessee State.
 
Kennedy Madison (Evansville, Ind.) added 15 kills and three blocks, while Mummey posted 14 kills and a .481 attacking clip. Allison Beckman (Apex, N.C.) recorded a double-double with 51 assists and 12 digs, as McKala Rhodes (Charleston, S.C.) tallied a match-high 19 digs. Jane Feddersen (Leesburg, Va.) chipped in 10 kills and four blocks.
 
Julia Pierson paced the Tigers with 14 kills and four blocks, while Maya Evans added 10 kills. Samantha Beltran recorded a double-double with 39 assists and 10 digs, as Rachel Henderson tallied a match-high six blocks.
 
Denver (3-0) edged the Cougars in the final match of the night by scores of 21-25, 26-24, 25-23, and 25-19 to claim the Hampton Inn & Suites Classic championship. The Pioneers tallied 58 kills, 10 blocks, and 76 digs while attacking at a .256 clip; Charleston posted 53 kills, nine blocks and 71 digs to go along with a .179 hitting percentage.
 
Freed led the way for Charleston with her third double-double of the weekend, tallying 16 kills and 12 digs. Mummey posted 13 kills, a career-high nine blocks, and a .462 hitting percentage, while Beckman recorded a double-double of her own with 46 assists and 10 digs to go along with four blocks and three kills. Devon Rachel (Louisville, Ky.) fell two digs shy of a double-double with 11 kills and eight digs, as Rhodes and Logan Manusky (San Diego, Calif.) notched 19 and 15 digs, respectively.
 
Kayla Principato paced the Pioneers with 20 kills on 40 swings, while making no errors to hit an even .500 for the night. Becca Latham and Cassie Baird added 15 and 10 kills, respectively, as Baird tallied 10 digs to account for a double-double. Piyusha Boteju recorded a double-double of her own with 28 assists and 11 digs, as Cassidy Rooke and Lydia Bartalo posted 26 and 15 digs, respectively.
 
For their efforts this weekend, Mummey and Freed were named to the All-Tournament Team along with Kaleigh Kelley of USC Upstate, Cherlie Adorno-DeJesus of Tennessee State, and Baird, Rooke and Principato (MVP) of Denver.
 
The Cougars return to the court on Tuesday when they host in-city foe Charleston Southern at 7:00 pm in TD Arena.
