MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team (4-3) came out firing against North Florida (5-2) on their 25
th Anniversary Alumni game, cruising to a 3-0 victory to snap UNF's five-game winning streak.
• The Cougars wasted no time getting on the board, which was all set up when
Laura Ortega earned a corner kick opportunity in the third minute. The Spaniard sailed the ball in to the box, where
Rachel Kim rose above the mass of humanity to head the ball home and lift the College to the early 1-0 lead.
• Twenty minutes later,
Alyssa Beck scored her third goal of the season, collecting the feed from
Talia Colchico and sending in a powerful strike from 25 yards out to beat the keeper far-side. Though the Cougars went into the locker room up 2-0, UNF matched them chance for chance with the shots at 9-9 and finishing the game down 15-13.
• CofC got a critical advantage in the 59
th minute when Beck threatened once again and Haley Cook hauled her down on a breakaway. That earned a red card for the senior defender, allowing the Cougars a player-advantage through the remainder of the contest.
• With less than five minutes to go,
Raymara Barreto scored her first of the season, blasting a point blank shot into the keeper, and then burying her own rebound to give the College the definitive 3-0 edge.
•
Genevieve Henderson established a new collegiate career high with six saves, coming up huge on multiple saves. The senior keeper has now earned three consecutive shutouts, preserving a clean sheet for the last 315 minutes.
The Cougars will return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they host the Jacksonville Dolphins.
