WILLIAMSBURG, VA. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team (5-4-1, 0-1-1) preserved a clean sheet Thursday, playing to a scoreless draw with William & Mary (4-7-1; 0-2-1).
• The first half of the game yielded some beautiful offensive soccer for both sides despite the lack of scoring.
Alyssa Beck,
Jessica Preedom and
Kalli Vogel all had quality looks for the Cougars on broken defensive plays for the Tribe, but fortune sided with the Tribe on each occasion.
•
Katrina Koomen stepped up in big moments on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. William & Mary had their best chance of the first half with a shot from the corner of the box, but Koomen stepped in for a sprawling Henderson to get a foot on the ball and send it away. Later, the redshirt freshman had the best CofC chance of the second half when an uncontested header in the box couldn't quite elude William & Mary's Grace Smith.
• The Tribe controlled the possession for nearly the entire second half, at one point outshooting the Cougars 7-1 for the period. The CofC defense stood tall to stymie the William & Mary attack, and were able to create chances late and in the overtime period as well. All told, the two teams finished knotted up in shots with 15 a piece, while William & Mary dominated the corner kick opportunities with 12.
•
Genevieve Henderson (4 saves) and Smith (6 saves) both finished with shutouts for the evening. For Henderson, it was her fifth solo shutout of the year. For the Tribe, it was their sixth consecutive game without a goal.
The Cougars will return home for a Sunday matinee against the Elon Phoenix at 1:00 p.m.
