Cougars Fall 3-2 to (RV) FIU

MIAMI - The College of Charleston men's soccer team (2-2) played an entertaining, back-and-forth contest with (RV) Florida International (2-0-2) on Sunday, but in the end FIU was too much for the Cougars to overcome, as the Panthers prevailed 3-2.
• The two teams had a distinct feeling-out phase through the 20 minutes. That was until Santiago Patino struck in the 26th minute, blitzing past multiple CofC defenders and firing far-side to lift the Panthers to the early advantage. Less than 10 minutes later, lightning in the area led to a nearly hour-long delay.
• The Cougars were able to equalize the game just before halftime when Khalil Abderahman scored off a feed from Cornell Holland with less than a minute to go in the opening frame.
• FIU opened the second half strong, and Patino struck again in the 51st minute to regain the lead. Ten minutes after that, FIU scored again thanks to Inigo Sagarduy to go up 3-1.
• The College wasn't quite done, as Matt Nozedar (68') scored his second goal of the year off Jake Nicholson's second assist of the year. But the equalizer proved too elusive for the Cougars, and that's where the scoring stopped.
• All told, FIU finished with a 15-10 advantage in shots, resulting in Kevin Shields making five saves in defeat. The game was extremely chippy, with a combined 30 fouls and four yellow cards between the two teams.
The Cougars will now enjoy their longest break of the season and won't play again for nine full days. They'll return to action on September 12 at home against UAB.
