NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's soccer team (3-3) retained the Silver Cup on Sunday, heading up to CSU Soccer Field and defeating the Charleston Southern Buccaneers (2-4) by a score of 2-0.
• The two teams felt each other out in the opening 15 minutes, but the College drew first blood on their third shot of the game in the 21st minute.
Alyssa Beck scored her second goal of the season when she sidestepped a defender from 35 yards out, and fired a shot with her left foot that found pay dirt.
•The Cougars weren't done for the half quite yet, and got an insurance tally just before half.
Katrina Koomen found the ball at midfield, and fired a deep lob forward to a streaking
Mary Kate Bowers. The senior shed her defender, and when the keeper came out to contest, Bowers juked her to the grass and then poked home the open-net goal in the 43rd minute.
• The Cougars soundly beat the the Bucs in shots to open the half, finishing the open 45 minutes with a 9-1 advantage and ending the game up 15-7. CSU more than doubled-up the College in fouls 8-3.
•
Genevieve Henderson earned her second consecutive shutout, and had a mostly easy time of it with one notable exception in the 57th minute. CSU's Jazzin Clark fired a deadly strike from top-center that looked destined to paint the top-right corner. Henderson stepped up, leapt at the perfect moment, and was able to rob the Bucs by extending her body beyond what physics would have seemed to allow and plucked it away.
The Cougars will remain on the road next weekend for a Florida swing that will pit them against Miami and Florida Atlantic.
