KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – College of Charleston freshman Chloe Currie (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada) was the Cougars' top finisher at The Ocean Course Invitational held Monday-Tuesday at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort.
Currie, who played on the Canadian Junior National Team, shot rounds of 78, 73 and 77, to finish at 9-over par for the tournament and tied for 29th.
One of the toughest golf courses in the U.S., Currie birdied the 3rd and 4th holes in the final round to cap off her collegiate debut for the Cougars against some of the nation's best.
Meanwhile, freshman Olivia Hamilton (Manchester, England) tied for 45th (+12) in her debut with rounds of 76, 79 and 76. As a team, the Cougars placed 14th in a tournament field comprised of nine teams that finished inside Golfstat.com's Top 30 last year.
"It's going to be a learning curve, when you're playing some of the best teams on one of the hardest golf courses you will ever play," CofC Head Coach Jamie Futrell said. "I still believe we have the makings of a great team – we just have to get the pieces and parts together. It may take us the fall to see how everyone fits, but the results will show shortly."
NC State won the team title shooting a three-round score of 881 (+5) ahead of runner-up Florida State (+8). Jennifer Kupcho of Wake Forest, who shot rounds of 69, 68 and 70, finished at 12-under for the tournament to claim individual medalist honors.
The Cougars will travel next to the William & Mary Invitational on Sept. 10-11 at the River Course at Kingsmill in Williamsburg, Va.
"The Williamsburg tournament will not be as strong as this field, because these are the best teams in the country," Futrell said. "However, we will see some conference (CAA) foes which will give us a good idea of where we stack up early. I'm very pleased with how our freshmen played this week. The future is really bright for this year's squad."
