CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston baseball team will play 33 games at Patriots Point, and take the field against nine teams that advanced to last season's NCAA Division I Baseball Championships in 2019, announced head coach Chad Holbrook on Tuesday.
The Cougars will face a demanding non-conference slate that includes matchups with nine NCAA tournament teams from last season, and five ranked in the final National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll. Coach Holbrook and the Cougars will welcome UNC Asheville, UConn, North Carolina A&T, Furman, and Dallas Baptist to Patriots Point for weekend series this season. Charleston is also scheduled to host Charleston Southern, Georgia Southern, Coastal Carolina, and The Citadel in midweek action throughout the season.
"This schedule is certainly full of challenges," Holbrook said. "We are excited to host non-conference foes UConn and Dallas Baptist as well as travel to Tucson, Arizona to play a quality Arizona program. Locally, we also have great matchups with Coastal Carolina, Clemson, and Georgia Southern in addition to exciting rivalry games with The Citadel and Charleston Southern."
Charleston will open the season with a 12-game homestand that begins on February 15 with a three-game set against UNC Asheville. The Cougars are also scheduled to host non-conference weekend series with UConn (Feb. 22-24), North Carolina A&T (Mar. 1-3), Furman (Mar. 15-17), and Dallas Baptist (Apr. 12-14). Coach Holbrook and the Cougars will also welcome Charleston Southern (Feb. 20 and Mar. 27), Georgia Southern (Feb. 26), Coastal Carolina (Feb. 27), and The Citadel (Mar. 26 and May 14) in midweek action.
The Cougars' non-conference slate away from Patriots Point features several marquee matchups, including a cross-country trek to Tucson, Ariz. for a weekend set with Arizona on Mar. 8-10. Charleston will also square off with Clemson in a unique two-game set on Mar. 19 and 20. The atypical "home-and-home" series is comprised of a game at Clemson on Mar. 19, followed by a neutral site matchup with the Tigers in Columbia, S.C. at Spirit Communications Park in which the Cougars will be the designated home team.
Midweek trips to Charleston Southern (Mar. 13 and May 7), Georgia Southern (Apr. 3 and 24), The Citadel (Apr. 9), and Coastal Carolina (Apr. 16) are also scheduled for the Cougars.
Colonial Athletic Association play will begin on Mar. 22-24 with a home series against Elon. The Cougars' CAA slate also includes home series with Hofstra (Mar. 29-31), UNCW (Apr. 26-28), and Towson (May 10-12). Road trips to James Madison (Apr. 5-7), Northeastern (Apr. 19-21), William & Mary (May 3-5), and Delaware (May 16-18) round out the Cougars' conference schedule.
"Our league always has some great teams, and ultimately, we will be judged by how we perform during conference play," Holbrook continued. "We tell our players every day about the challenges this schedule will present. They are fully aware that we will have to consistently play at a high level to have a successful season."
The 2019 CAA Baseball Championship will be held on May 22-26 in Harrisonburg, Va. on the James Madison campus.
