CHARLESTON, S.C. – Victor Oladipo,
Curren Page and
Tucker Heffron grabbed a goal apiece as the College of Charleston men's soccer team closed out the 2018 home schedule with a 3-0 non-conference win over Winthrop on Tuesday night. The win gives Charleston two in a row as they look to gain momentum for a late Colonial Athletic Association Championship push with two conference road games in the next week.
The game started evenly with the first opportunity falling to the Cougars. Page whipped a free-kick in from the right wing with
Matt Nozedar rising highest, but his header fell straight to the Winthrop goalkeeper.
Cornell Holland had a series of half-chances in the space of two minutes. The second came after a smart turn midway in the Eagles half with the effort from 25-yards saved to the left.
In the 26
th minute Charleston found the opener.
Steven Cahill found space around the box, slipping the ball between the defenders for Oladipo to finish into the bottom right corner.
Five minutes later it was 2-0.
Marcelo Malpartida cut in from the right wing and played across to Page. The senior let the ball roll across his body at the top of the box and fired a left-footed shot into the bottom right for his first goal of the season.
Just before half-time
Rio Murray nearly made it three. Malpartida played the ball in the right channel with Murray's pace carrying him wide before he fired an effort that flashed across the face of goal.
Midway through the second half the Cougars pushed the lead to three. Oladipo found space in the right of the box, squaring the ball for Heffron to tap-in from five yards to claim his team-leading sixth of the season.
Treston Kederer made just two saves in 90 minutes with the Charleston defense holding the Eagles to just 10 shots. Charleston now look to close out their season with two CAA victories on the road as they attempt to make a late playoff run. First the men face Hofstra on Saturday afternoon (1 p.m. kickoff) before traveling to William & Mary on Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. match.
Quotable – Head Coach Ralph Lundy
On the 3-0 win…
"I thought the last 25 minutes of the first half we played real well, real well. We started a little slow and we played back too much… but then all at once we went to goal, we kept the ball, we combined and played through and scored some nice goals. Last home game of the season it's great to win, it feels good. Right now we're playing better than we have played through the season so it's nice."
On keeping the momentum going into the two CAA games…
"The boys are up, they feel good, they feel confident. Hoftra's a tough place to go always, but we love it… so we've got a chance and we've won two in a row so we've gotta carry it on."
