Cougars Shoot Lowest 54-Hole Total In Program History To Win Palmetto Intercollegiate

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – It all came down to the last six holes during Tuesday's final round of the Palmetto Intercollegiate held at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort's Turtle Point course.
Instead of panicking after holding a commanding nine-stroke lead through the first 36 holes of tournament play, the College of Charleston women's golf team rose to the occasion.
After making the turn, Campbell closed in on the Cougars and took a one-shot lead with six holes remaining.
"Once a team passes you, it's probably done," CofC Head Coach Jamie Futrell said. "You know when somebody is playing really well against you. The last six holes, we played 6-under par and it was just unbelievable."
Junior Victoria Huskey (Greenville, S.C.) birdied three of her last six holes to finish in a three-way tie for individual medalist honors with sophomore teammate Clarissa von Stosch (Kassel, Germany) and Emily Hawkins of Campbell. All three carded a 4-under par 212 – Huskey with a final-round 69.
"Congrats to both," Futrell said. "Victoria has been second quite a few times in her collegiate career and it was great to see her win one. Clarissa has finished the fall extremely well."
Junior Anna-Theresa Rottluff (Dusseldorf, Germany) eagled the par-5 13th and birdied three of her last five holes to tie for fifth at 1-under par for the tournament, while sophomore Jodee Tindal (Rock Hill, S.C.) shot an even-par round and tied for 17th (+5). Sophomore Olivia Hamilton (Oakenshaw, England) was the fourth counting score to lead the Cougars to victory with a 2-under par 70 with birdies on the 16th and 18th.
"We didn't play bad, Campbell just played good in the final round." Futrell said. "To hold them off and win the tournament, it was a pretty amazing feat. Especially, against a team as good as they are."
Both the Cougars and Camels are currently ranked back-to-back in the Golfstat Rankings at No. 35 and No. 34 respectively in a tournament field that was comprised of three Top 50 teams.
CofC shot the lowest 54-hole total in program history with a 6-under par 858, which eclipsed the previous school-record of 861 at the 2013 Cougar Classic at Yeamans Hall Club. Campbell was runner-up with an 869 (+5), Kansas third (+8), North Florida fourth (+21) and No. 47 Charlotte and Wichita State tied for fifth (+29).
"Excellent teams play well every week and we are one of those teams right now," said Futrell, who captured his 27th career coaching victory on Tuesday. "To win is a bonus. To be there every week speaks volumes about the team we have, because we have had some gut wrenchers this fall (placing second or third in the last three tournaments prior to the Palmetto Intercollegiate)."
Charleston has hosted the Palmetto Intercollegiate since 1999 and the last five years at Turtle Point – one of the toughest courses at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort next to The Ocean Course. It was the first team tournament win for the Cougars in 19 years of hosting the fall tournament.
"They've had a great fall," Futrell said. "Now, we just have to work hard in the offseason and be ready to hit it in the spring."
CofC will return to action in the spring at the UCF Challenge on Feb. 3-5, 2019, at the Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando, Fla.
