Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

De Souza Scores First of the Season in Loss at JMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Joao Mauricio de Souza grabbed his first goal of the season, but the College of Charleston men's soccer team fell 3-1 to Colonial Athletic Association leaders James Madison, on the road on Saturday night.

The Cougars fell behind early with Billy Metzler firing past Cougars goalkeeper Cameron Smith from the top of the box after just 12 seconds.

Tucker Heffron looked to continue his goal-scoring form for The College in the fifth minute, but his effort flew over the bar. Cornell Holland also had an effort at goal that was blocked by the Dukes defender.

In the 27th minute JMU doubled their lead, Aaron Ward-Baptiste with a header that flew past Smith to make it 2-0.

Marcelo Malpartida had Charleston's first shot on target in the 35th minute, but TJ Bush in the JMU goal was equal to the effort.

The Dukes made it 3-0 in the 65th minute through Manuel Ferriol's finish from six-yard outs.

Charleston grabbed a consolation minutes later after JMU fouled in the penalty area. De Souza tucking the penalty away for his first goal of the season to cut the score-line to 3-1.

JMU held the Cougars at bay for the remainder of the match to get the win and move Charleston to 3-7-2 on the season, 0-3-1 in the CAA.

Head coach Ralph Lundy and his squad now take a week off before opening a stretch of three home games with Elon on Sat., Oct. 13 at Patriots Point Soccer Complex.
