CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's tennis team begins their Spring season this weekend with a pair of road matches in Florida, where they will take on Bethune-Cookman on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Florida A&M on Sunday at noon.
The Cougars come off a 14-8 campaign last season. In the CAA Tournament, CofC handily dispatched James Madison 4-0 before narrowly falling in the Semifinals to top-seeded UNCW by a 4-2 margin.
The College remains dangerous at the top of its lineup with both
Juan Estevarena and
Benedikt Henning returning to the team. The two combined to go a sizzling 31-7 in first and second flight singles play, while Estevarena was a potent 11-3 in top flight doubles play. CofC lost the middle of its order with the graduation of
Vasily Kichigin and
Rodrigo Encinas, meaning the Cougars will look to their four other returners, as well as newcomers Youssef Dabbabi and
Ksawery Pociej, to fill the void.
The Cougars have met the Wildcats in Daytona Beach in each of the past three seasons, earning victory in each encounter. Last year, CofC won the doubles point as well as the top three singles flights to earn the 5-2 edge. Estevarena, Henning and
Ryan Khan all won their matches in two sets. BCU comes off a rough 1-18 campaign last year, with their lone win of the season coming against Hampton.
CofC has played against Florida A&M for the last three straight seasons as well, and have also won three in a row. CofC surrendered the doubles point in the lower flights in last year's encounter, but rebounded to take every singles point for a 6-1 win.
