MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Both the men's and women's tennis teams for the College of Charleston defeated their NC A&T counterparts by 7-0 margins on Sunday at Patriots Point. The women rise to 6-1 on the season, while the men move to 3-2.
The women kicked things off in the morning, winning their two top doubles flights to carry the advantage into singles. Both Helena Nyikos and Turner Yates carved through their opponents like butter on courts one and four respectively, putting CofC up 3-0. From there, Sarah Jane Jones proved to be the hero for the Cougars, grinding out a 7-5 win in the first set on court six before powering through to a 6-0 win to secure the clinching fourth point for CofC.
Catalina Medici defeated Nadia Hilton-Adams 6-2, 6-3, and both Rachel McNeely (4-6, 6-3, 10-4) and Anastasia Palaska (6-2, 7-6(7)) finished things strong with tiebreak wins."
"It was great to make our home debut, it's been a long time coming," Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. "I was particularly proud of the professionalism and sportsmanship on display from both teams, and it was a pleasure to be a part of that."
In men's play, the Cougars swept through the doubles point with three decisive wins to capture the point. The second flight pairing of Benedikt Henning and Easton Thomas both went on to win convincingly in singles, which put CofC up 3-0.
The remaining four matches however were all decided in three sets, as NC A&T wouldn't go down without a fight. Things remained in flux until Ksawery Pociej finally clinched the match on court three with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win over Adair Bartra. Youssef Dabbabi followed that up with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 win on court six against Jordan Lawrence, and Alec Angradi was next up with a 6-2, 6-7(5), 7-5 win on court four.
Ryan Kahn closed things out, and bounced back as the only Cougar to drop his opening set to win two straight tiebreaks for a 4-6, 7-6(7), 12-10 win on court two against Jorge Goenaga.
"We handled some challenges today in difficult conditions," head men's tennis coach Jay Bruner said. "We had some younger players who needed to step up do so for us, and that's what we're going to be looking for down the road."
The men and women both shift their focus to their next opponent, St. John's. The women host the Red Storm on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m., while the men will play them on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
