Box Score RIVERSIDE, CALIF. – The College of Charleston men's tennis team (6-7) put a halt to its losing skid on Sunday, overcoming a hiccup in doubles play to defeat UC Riverside (9-11) 5-2.
The Cougars picked up a win on court three doubles when
Alec Angradi and
Benedikt Henning defeated their opponents 6-4, but the Highlanders won the top two flights 6-2 and 6-4 to take the point.
Fernando Ramirez Lascurian answered back in sixth flight singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Anderson Ju to even the match up at 1-1.
CofC continued to push the advantage with two wins in the middle flights thanks to a 6-1, 6-4 win by
Ksawery Pociej and a 6-2, 6-1 win from Angradi, but UC Riverside fired back when Kyle McCann prevailed on court two to bring the match to a 3-2 advantage in favor of the Cougars.
Easton Thomas clinched the day for CofC on court five, pulling ahead of Gilbert Chung in a first set tiebreak before finishing the match off 6-4 in the second set.
Benedikt Henning added a point for good measure, rebounding from a 6-2 deficit to defeat Pawl Jankowiak 6-4, 6-1 in the second and third sets of flight one play.
"After a slow start, we were able to finish the match today with confidence," head coach
Jay Bruner said. "I think our players are starting to trust their teammates on the courts next to them to give it their all, and that bodes well for us going forward."
The Cougars finish off their road-trip Monday when they square off against Southern Utah for the first time in program history.
