Cougars Defeat New Orleans, No. 18 Tulane, Fall To No. 20 Florida Atlantic On Saturday

BATON ROUGE, La. --- Allison Beckman (Apex, N.C.) and Lauren Freed (Troy, Ohio) posted three wins on Saturday, including two at fours, to lead the No. 21 College of Charleston beach volleyball team to a 2-1 day at the Tiger Beach Challenge with victories over New Orleans and No. 18 Tulane.
 
College of Charleston (9-4) started the day with a 5-0 win over New Orleans, and after taking the points at fours and fives against No. 18 Tulane, held on for the 3-2 victory over the Green Wave with a straight-set win at threes. The Cougars fell to No. 20 Florida Atlantic, 4-1, to close out the day.
 
In the first match of the day, Taylor Foley (Agoura Hills, Calif.) and Logan Manusky (San Diego, Calif.) got the Cougars going with a 21-12, 21-8 win at fours before Beckman and Freed took the point at fives, 21-15, 18-21, 15-9. Devon Rachel (Louisville, Ky.) and McKala Rhodes (Charleston, S.C.) followed with a 21-8, 21-19 win at twos, while Riana Brennan (Los Gatos, Calif.) and Kennedy Madison (Evansville, Ind.) won at threes, 21-10, 21-18. Krissy Mummey (Hudson, Ohio) and Katja Ehlers (Raleigh, N.C.) posted a 21-14, 19-21, 15-9 decision at ones, and Lauren Hollman (Union, Ky.) and Britney Vallez (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) won 21-15, 21-5 at sixes.
 
The Cougars carried that momentum into their match against Tulane, and took a 2-0 lead early on. After Foley and Manusky opened with a 21-10, 21-17 win at fives, Freed and Beckman posted a 21-18, 21-15 decision at fours. Tulane responded with a straight-set win at ones to halve the margin to 2-1, before Brennan and Madison delivered the deciding point at threes with a 21-14, 21-15 victory. The Green Wave won at twos, 21-17, 19-21, 15-12, while Vallez and Hollman took sixes by scores of 21-15 and 21-12.
 
In the final match of the day, the Cougars and Florida Atlantic split at fours and fives, with Beckman and Freed winning 21-19, 21-13 at fours. Florida Atlantic took a 2-1 lead with a 21-19, 21-11 victory at ones, and claimed the decisive point with a 22-24, 21-15, 15-9 win at twos after Rachel and Rhodes took the first set. Madison and Brennan replicated the feat at threes with a 21-16 first-set before the Owls' pair answered with set wins of 21-18 and 15-12. Vallez and Hollman battled hard at sixes, but fell in straight sets, 15-21, 17-21.
 
Charleston will wrap up the weekend with two matches on Sunday to conclude the Tiger Beach Challenge. The Cougars will open the day with a 9:00 am CT matchup with No. 10 LSU, followed by a 12:00 pm CT tilt against No. 17 Stetson.
