CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team (8-3) continues their four-match home-stand this week with two back-to-back contests on deck against Providence (1-3) and Campbell (4-5).
The Cougars will play the Friars at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, a half hour early than previously scheduled in an attempt at getting the match in before expected inclement weather hits. CofC then plays the Camels on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
CofC has enjoyed the production from both their flight one (
Anastasia Palaska,
Christi Woodson) and flight three (
Laura Arciniegas,
Turner Yates) doubles tandems this season, with both duos sporting 6-2 records on the season. In singles play,
Catalina Medici returned for a win against Savannah State after a brief absence from the lineup, and boasts the team's best singles record at 7-1. Medici has played all across the three lower flights.
Neither team represents a familiar foe for the College. CofC and CU shared the Trans-America Athletic Conference (TAAC) from 1992 to 1998, but have only met once since then, back in 2001. The Cougars have never played the Friars in the school's NCAA Division I era.
After sweeping past Saint Peter's in their Spring opener, Providence has lost three straight to Siena, Butler and Dayton. Top flight ace Risa Takenaka has more singles wins than any other Friar on the season with two. PC is led by third-year head coach Jakob Klaeson.
Campbell has rallied from a 1-5 start to the season to rebound with three straight wins heading into Wednesday's play, including a 4-3 win over Coastal Carolina and a 7-0 thrashing of conference rival Longwood. Third flight player Lou Regen has the best singles record for CU at 5-3 on the year, while Ana Castillo and Georgina Segarra pose a formidable second-flight doubles duo with a 6-2 record on the year.
Admission to all CofC home tennis matches is free of charge.
