Saturday Split Helps Cougars To First 15-Win Season

COLUMBIA, S.C. --- The No. 20 College of Charleston beach volleyball team opened the day with a clean sweep of Coastal Carolina before falling to No. 9 and host South Carolina, 4-1, to finish regular season with a 15-8 record following a 2-2 weekend at the Palmetto Invitational.
 
With the victory over Coastal Carolina (1-15), College of Charleston (15-8) secures the first 15-win season in program history. The Cougars cruised past the Chanticleers, 5-0, with only one dropped set. Allison Beckman (Apex, N.C.) and Lauren Freed (Troy, Ohio) nabbed the first point with a 21-13, 21-18 win at fours, before Krissy Mummey (Hudson, Ohio) and McKala Rhodes (Charleston, S.C.) registered a 21-19, 21-18 win at twos.
 
Kennedy Madison (Evansville, Ind.) and Riana Brennan (Los Gatos, Calif.) won at threes by scores of  21-12 and 21-17 to clinch the team victory. Britney Vallez (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) and Logan Manusky (San Diego, Calif.) posted a 21-14, 21-16 win at fives, before Katja Ehlers (Raleigh, N.C.) and Devon Rachel (Louisville, Ky.) held on for a 21-17, 18-21, 15-7 victory at ones. Ella Ridinger (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) and Lauren Hollman (Union, Ky.) won at sixes, 21-13, 21-17.
 
The Cougars battled throughout the final dual of the weekend against a tough South Carolina squad, falling 4-1 and forcing two matches to a decisive third set. Manusky and Taylor Foley (Agoura Hills, Calif.) delivered a 21-14, 21-13 win at fives for the Cougars' only point of the dual.
 
Ehlers and Rachel jumped out to a 1-0 lead at ones with a 21-19 first-set win before the Gamecocks rallied with scores of 21-16 and 15-8 in the second and third sets. Vallez and Hollman forced the sixth flight to three sets in a 13-21, 24-22, 8-15 setback, as Mummey and Rhodes hung tough in a 19-21, 18-21 match at twos.
 
Charleston now awaits the final seedings ahead of next weekend's Coastal Collegiate Sports Association Championships, to be held at the Rally Volleyball Complex at the LakePoint Sporting Community in LakePoint, Ga. on April 20-22.
