CHARLESTON, S.C. – An 85
th minute goal saw the College of Charleston men's soccer team fall 2-1 to the University of North Florida in the final matchup before conference play begins this weekend.
The Cougars had the ball in the back of the net inside two minutes until play was pulled back for an offside. In his first appearance of the season, Victor Olapido began the move on the left wing with a slick interchange ending with him lobbing the goalkeeper from six yards before the whistle brought play back.
Oladipo and
Cole Gulledge had efforts saved until the Osprey's took the lead with their first effort on goal. Mikey Connell took the ball down in the left of the box and fired into the corner for his third goal of the season.
In the 37
th minute the Cougars found an equalizer. A handball in the box saw Joao de Souza step up to the penalty spot with his effort striking the inside of the left post and bouncing into
Kevin Harris' path. Harris tucked the rebound away to level the game with his first goal of the season.
North Florida began the second half on the front foot, but the clearer chances came for Charleston with
Tucker Heffron,
Moussa Diarra and de Souza having efforts at goal. De Souza's effort came after smart link-up play from
Liam Hudock and
Cornell Holland with the strike from 22 yards clipping the top of the bar and bouncing clear.
UNF continued to look dangerous on the counter with
Treston Kederer blocking an effort from eight yards as the game entered the final stages. In the 85
th minute the Osprey's found the goal with Connell setting up AJ Williams from five yards to take a 2-1 lead.
Charleston threw bodies forward as they looked to level the game, Heffron coming closest with an effort from the edge of the box that flew narrowly around the top right corner.
The final whistle confirmed a 2-1 loss for Charleston who move to 3-3-1 on the year and now look to Colonial Athletic Association play on Saturday with a road trip to Delaware.
