Delaware Score in Overtime to Defeat Charleston in CAA Opener

NEWARK, Del. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team fell to a late goal in the Colonial Athletic Association opener with Delaware scoring minutes into overtime to take the 2-1 win in Newark.

Tucker Heffron scored his team-leading, third goal of the season, early in the first half. Jake Nicholson, returning to the starting lineup after missing the last game through injury, whipped a free kick from the right channel into the box. Heffron found space to head the ball down into the left corner and past the Blue Hens keeper for the early 1-0 lead.

In the 34th minute Delaware won a penalty with a handball occurring inside the Charleston penalty area. Treston Kederer stayed big and dived late to the bottom left corner to deny the Blue Hens and keep the Cougars in the lead.

But minutes later they would get their equalizer. A header from Timo Hummrich off a corner kick found its way into the bottom corner to level the game at 1-1.

The second half saw the game become an even affair. The best opportunity for Charleston fell to Rio Murray who burst into the right hand side of the box but his effort from 15-yards was blocked by the goalkeeper.

As the game entered the final minute, Murray won the ball at the halfway line and burst through, but the Blue Hens crowded him out to close the opportunity and send the game into overtime.

Just minutes into the overtime period Delaware found the goal with a one-two and cross finding Hummrich once again. His first effort was cleared off the line, but the rebound found the back of the net to give Delaware the 2-1 victory.

Charleston (3-4-1, 0-1 CAA) now look to the conference home opening match against UNCW on Wednesday evening. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Patriots Point Soccer Complex.
