NEWARK, Del. –Alyssa Beck's header midway through the first half proved to be the game-winner as Charleston won their second consecutive road game, this time at Delaware 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Cougars move into a tie for second position in the Colonial Athletic Association standings with a 3-1 conference record, 8-5 overall.
Beck and
Talia Colchico had efforts at goal in the opening 20 minutes, but neither troubled Cali Loeffler in the Delaware goal.
In the 26
th minute
Sara Deutsch went close. Deutsch picked the ball up 30-yards from goal and struck a right-footed effort the clipped the top of the crossbar and bounced out of play.
Minutes later Beck opened the scoring with her fourth goal of the year. A foul in the right channel allowed
Raymara Barreto to whip a free-kick into the box, Beck rising highest from eight-yards out to nod into the bottom right corner.
Midway through the second half,
Kacey Smekrud went close to doubling the Cougars lead. Smekrud turned her marker smartly 30-yards from goal and struck a right footed effort that flew narrowly past Delaware's right post.
The Blue Hens attempted to pull themselves back into the game with a succession of corners,
Meredith Holton making two saves in the space of three minutes as the game entered the final 15 minutes.
Current CAA Player of the Week
Laura Ortega almost made it four goal in four games in the 82
nd minute, but her effort from 20-yards flew a yard wide of the top right corner.
The Cougars saw the remaining minutes out comfortably to record their second straight 1-0 road victory and third win in conference play. Charleston moves to 8-5 on the season and have now won four-straight against the Blue Hens dating back to 2015.
Postgame Quotes - Head Coach Christian Michner
On the game…
"I have to say it was a total team effort to get another important win away from home. I'm proud of how my team stayed focused and resilient under pressure. We had to make a few changes to our style and that is a credit to Delaware and how they attacked us today, especially in the second half. We are finding ways to grind out positive results on the road and that is a key ingredient of successful teams. Very happy for the girls who battled hard for 90 minutes."
